Most football supporters are at least given an opportunity to try and save their teams. Sadly in our case, Widnes Football Club announced on June 29th, 2025 that they were withdrawing from all competitions effective immediately. This meant that the supporters and the community were unable to try and step forward to save the club.
Almost immediately following the closure of the old team, a group of interested people began the discussion about how football could be brought back to Widnes.
On September 18th, we resolved to create Widnes Town FC with the aspiration to be a community based club with the focus of providing a senior team for both men and women. We also aspire to create Education Academy teams at U-18 for male and female, U-19 male, U-21 female and U-23 male and female teams. This would allow young players aged 16+ to transition into full time football training whilst pursuing education qualifications that could then be used to go on to university or learn an industry specific trade.
We are working to create a Widnes Town FC Community Trust to manage all of our community activities and once created we will invite other local junior clubs to partner with us on this initiative. We don’t really want to create junior teams because we would rather support the efforts of existing junior clubs through partnering with them. Those clubs who partner with us will also receive representation on the Board of the Community Trust.
As for the first team management and administration, we are hoping to create a committee early next year. Until then, all efforts will be managed by a steering group.
At this time we are asking that people take a few minutes to follow us on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter / X to build up our social media followers which will be crucial in attracting sponsorships and grant funding. If you would like to express an interest in joining the management committee of the first team and / or the Vikings Trust, please email widnestownfc@gmail.com.
